Further news of the fox - or one of the many foxes it seems, ....
We have lost two hens, but managed to hang on to the other two. They were taken around dusk just as they would be meandering back to the coop. The remaining hens have been a bit traumatised to say the least, but are now getting back into their old habits.

There are rabbits everywhere around here at the moment. And, perhaps in consequence, a young fox has shown it's face. The buzzards are being successfully harrassed by the adult swallows when they soar over the moors and farmland. It is a great spectacle.

We have had lots of the stuff this past week or so. Huge puddles, some flattened crops not too far away and low temperatures to add to the un-seasonal feel. However, it is not quite got to this just yet....:

19th May 2011
We've had about 10 days of either rain, drizzle or murky clouds. It has freshened everything up and brought a welcome increase in grass for the farmers, what with the large number of lambs in the fields at the moment. On the other hand, the docks are growing like wildfire and resembling Triffids more every day.....

We have had no significant rainfall for quite some time now. The ground iseither rock hard or very powdery on the surface. It has been very pleasant enjoying the sunny weather but there are plenty of plants to keep watered, including my first attempt since childhood (pathetic, I know) to grow some potatoes. I followed Monty Don's advice from an episode of Gardener's World a few weeks back, and put four chitted spuds in two bins. One has sprouted a few leaves, but the three remaining are either biding their time or not with us any more.
5th January 2011
A very happy and prosperous New Year to all.
The weather has straightened itself out now - there has been a lot of rain about mixed with a bit of sleet, which has made it seem colder than it actually is. There was no sign of the eclipse of the sun due to the blanket coverage of thick cloud. However, we have had some tremendously dark nights with good atmospherics for stargazing.
