Park up at the Manifold visitor centre in Hulme End - the path is a bit narrow in places so watch out for cyclists. Follow the trail for about a mile until you reach the road crossing the trail at Ecton, and turn left onto this road (trail goes straight ahead) and stroll up to the T-junction:
and cross the road and take the fork off to the left up the slope.
After about 200 yards, you will see a public footpath sign. Follow the path round and head up the hill - this was once mining country and you can see evidence of this all around. Once you are clear of the trees you will see anumber of paths. I always take the one that passes just above the small copse and runs across the face of Ecton Hill. There is a photo of the view from here in the 'Scenery' gallery. This path can feel exposed to those affected by such things, so watch your step if it is muddy or icy, but it is not normally a problem.
Fine views across the Manifold valley to Warslow and (further round) the church spires of Butterton and Grindon. Once the path has rounded the shoulder of the hill, start your descent, watching out for the fearsome Gorse bushes! When you reach the roadside, turn left and follow the road around to Swainsley Tunnel. From here you can take the trail all the way back to the car park at Hulme End.
