The Longnor Marathon

Well I made the distance to be approximately 26 miles when I did this walk. There were four of us; I was wearing a pair of walking boots totally unsuited to the task (in that they started to leak during the first half-hour); we ran out of drinks half a mile from the finish. It was great.

The walk is desribed quite simply thus: "Leave Longnor and walk by the side of the Manifold and Hamps rivers (as near as footpaths allow, anyway) to Ilam; head over to the River Dove and walk back to Longnor".

OS Map Outdoor Leisure 24 (or equivalent) is really really useful for this walk. Very briefly:

  • Longnor
  • Hulme End
  • Manifold Trail
  • Leave trail at (approx) Beeston Tor
  • Cross the tops near Throwley Hall to Ilam
  • (cup of tea/ice cream if possible)
  • River Dove (at the base of Thorpe Cloud)
  • Milldale
  • Wolfscote Dale
  • Beresford Dale
  • Hartington (more supplies)
  • Pilsbury (minor road & path)
  • Longnor

Tiring, but jolly good if the weather is nice. Allow plenty of time though....
