longnor - in the staffordshire moorlands and the peak district national park

Unbelievable

They really are...

  • In 1489, Longnor had four time-zones - MostEast, NearEast, NearWest, FarthestWest
  • Legend has it that Robin Hood spent his honeymoon in Longnor
  • It only rains round here on Thursday, and it is never cold
  • There is a long-running chess match between fierce rival teams the Longnorites, the Longnorish, and the Longnorians
  • The band of minstrels and court-jesters that roamed the area in Elizabethan times is now known as Longnor Players

And with an element of veracity:

  • There were plans in the 70s to make the upper Manifold valley a reservoir
  • The last choirmaster of Longnor church used to make the choir sing unaccompanied
  • All the main routes into Longnor meet around the middle of the village
  • A few years ago, somebody fell off their brand-new bike, outside Trevor's shop
